Bela Lugosi, born on the western boarder of Transylvania in 1882, was raised in the town of Lugos. This was the name he would later take as his own. He was the youngest of 4 children who grew up preferring acting to schoolwork. At the age of 12, Lugosi left home to pursue his acting career.
During WWI, he put his career aside to serve his country and was promoted to Captain in the Ski Patrol. He was wounded and received the equivalent of the Purple Heart for his valor.
Some time later, Bela Lugosi relocated to the US and became a naturalized citizen. His acting career continued even though he knew very little English. Lugosi simply formed a Hungarian stock company. His first English speaking play, “The Red Poppy” brought him rave reviews. The entire role had been phonetically memorized, an amazing task in itself.
